Nat Thomas & Kristen Phillips
picassol...a work in progress

Smashing through the phallocentric bias of contemporary art history, picassol is an ongoing collaborative project by Nat Thomas and Kristen Phillips which encompasses video, performance, installation…and some very silly contemporary dance.

The picassol project focuses on the volatile relationship between Picasso and Dora Maar. Maar herself was a talented artist, whose work fell under the monolithic shadow of the ‘cubist master’. Through its canny combination of theatrics, parody and performativity, the picassol project ridicules the notion of the solitary artistic genius, exposing the patricarchal bias and historical power-mongering which underlies such rhetoric.

Thomas’ and Phillips’ work thus gives voice to the alternative narratives and possibilities which have been previously silenced by art history’s continual search its the next (male) superstar.
