Yuken Teruya
RAPT! 20 Contemporary Artists from Japan
Presented by the Japan Foundation for the Australia - Japan Cultural Exchange Year in 2006
Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces is proud to present a brand new body of work by Japanese born, New York based artist Yuken Teruya. Having recently undertaken a one-month residency at Artspace in Sydney, as well as a one-week residency at Bundanon in rural New South Wales, Teruya will present a multi-faceted installation in Gertrude’s Front Gallery that responds to the unique geographical perspective of Australia. Comprising of three wall- and floor-based tents that will house projections of the Japanese night sky, as well as intricate pencil-drawings of the celestial southern sky, Teruya’s installation will invite us to contemplate the mystery and awe of the universe and that of human existence. Fusing portraiture with astrological mapping, and connecting the magnitude of the universe with the trace of human life, Teruya’s installation will offer a quiet meditation on the geo-political undercurrents of planetary research, as well as the romance of 19th century astronomy. Exploring the nature of relationships among different structures, and presenting both microcosmic and macrocosmic scales and perspectives, Teruya’s exhibition marks an exciting shift in his internationally celebrated practice.
