GENERAL INFORMATION
16 low cost, non-residential studios located at Gertrude Contemporary Art Apaces are available to emerging artists for a period of two years. They range in size from 30–72 square metres. All spaces have fluorescent light and access to running water. Most have additional natural light and some have a private sink. The first and second floor studios allow good access for large works.

The current subsidised monthly rental is $200* including electricity. Tenants are required to pay one months rent in advance, and a bond which is equivalent to two month’s rent.

APPLICATION SUBMISSION DATE
For studios becoming available in 2009, please submit applications by Friday 19 September 2008 by 5.30pm (postmark date).

ELIGIBILITY
All visual artists, except those working in very heavy materials or with dangerous chemicals are eligible to apply. Full-time students at any level may not hold a studio at Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces. Those taking up full-time study while holding a studio will be required to relinquish it upon doing so. Part-time students must provide details of their course, contact hours and studio facilities. Applicants must be able to commit to a two-year period of residency, and must treat studio rental responsibilities as a priority.

CRITERIA
Successful applicants are chosen on the basis of quality of work, perceived potential, space requirements and financial need.The organisation also attempts to create a balance of media, gender and age in the studio artist body.

REQUIRED INFORMATION
1. Completed application form. Use Adobe Acrobat to type into the form and print, or else print and complete by hand.
2. One CV (no more than one A4 page)
3. Visual materials (see below)
4. Large stamped self-addressed envelope for return of visual materials

VISUAL MATERIALS
Please submit work that has been completed in the past 2 years. Material in excess of the limits below will not be viewed by the committee.


Preferred visual materials
12 digital images on CD, saved as individual JPEGS at 72-dpi resolution.
One DVD (10 minutes max.)


Not accepted
Slides, catalogues, photographs, colour photocopies, or any other printed material; VHS tapes; Powerpoint presentations; images saved in a PDF document.

If you submit more than one format of visual material, please halve the amount/viewing time. (Eg. If you submit JPEGs and a DVD, we will only view 6 images and 5 minutes of the DVD). Material must be clearly labelled with the artist’s name, title of work and date of execution. With DVDs, please indicate segment lengths. N.B. Safe return of improperly labelled material cannot be guaranteed. Do not send original or irreplaceable material.

Please note that CDs and DVDs will not be returned if a stamped, self-addressed envelope is not included with the application.

DECISIONS
Selection is made by the Studio Selection Panel, whose members include gallery staff, practising artists and other arts professionals. Applicants will be advised of results in writing. Panel decisions are final and cannot be negotiated.
