Studio 18 Application
Guidelines
Located on the second floor of the Gertrude complex, Studio 18 is
a residential studio space available to international and interstate
artists. The Studio 18 program allows visitors to participate in
and contribute to Melbourne’s art community, and also facilitates
the exchange of information between Australian and international
artists. Visiting artists to Studio 18 benefit from working within
a professionally supported environment of artists and colleagues.
Studio 18 is a self contained open plan studio and living space,
approximately 96m2, with good natural and artificial light. It encompasses
a small kitchen equipped with cooking facilities, a private bathroom,
mezzanine bed space, telephone/fax, black and white TV and basic
furniture. A washing machine is not provided. Access to the gallery’s
fax, photcopier, basic computer and email is available by arrangement,
for a small user’s fee. Some basic tools can be borrowed from
the gallery office, however visiting artists are responsible for
providing their own tools and materials.
The studio is centrally located in an area in which artists, arts
professionals, academics and students reside, and the locale of
many galleries, affordable cafes and restaurants, and is about a
kilometre from the central business district of Melbourne. Access
to public transport means that most areas of the city and surrounding
suburbs can be reached easily.
Eligibility
Contemporary visual artists pursuing an innovative practice in a
professional capacity are eligible to apply. The ability to accommodate
artists using very heavy or unusually large materials may be limited
due to restricted access. Artists wishing to use power tools or
toxic materials (such as resin) should indicate their intentions.
Tenancy
Visiting artists to Studio 18 are able to take up residency for
6-week to 3-month periods. A nominal
rent is charged as outlined below, which includes all outgoing costs,
except telephone which is charged separately according to use.
Rental Charges
Rental charges are currently set at $165 per week (including GST),
which includes all outgoing costs, except telephone which is charged
separately according to use.
Availability
Studio 18 is currently available from February 2009.
