Chaco Kato studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1989 after completing her first degree, a Bachelor of Arts in creative writing at Nihon University. She moved to Australia in 1996 and completed her Master of Fine Arts at Victoria College of the Arts in 1999. Since then, she has been actively exhibiting her work in public galleries, commercial places and artist-run spaces, such as studio12 at Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces 2001, ‘Entice’ Mornington Peninsula Gallery in 2001, the Sukima project in Tokyo in 2002, and ‘Organic’ at McClelland Gallery 2000. Now she is represented by the Dianne Tanzer Gallery in Melbourne where she had an individual show in 2003 and 2005. Recently her works have been short listed for the Small Sculpture Prize, Sydney, 2004 and Montalto Sculpture Prize 2005. She was the recipient of a full French Government Scholarship and residency of Cites International des Arts (92-93) and other grants such as Arts Victoria, Creative New Zealand, and the Holbein Scholarship. She also organizes an environmental art project, ‘Breathing Soil’ since 2000, with the support of Arts Victoria, City of Yarra and City West Water.
