Information
I thought I'd escaped all the traps of the photographer – lots of expensive equipment, tonal detail that the uneducated eye can't see, being poisoned with stop bath, the ability to use a light meter. But then I realised that such a big thing about being a photographer is the morbid desire to hold onto everything, desperately trying to capture moments as they pass into eternity. And that's pretty much what I've been doing through my practice from day one. All that stuff about fashion, portraiture, share households – it's about trying to cheat death because, as consumerism makes us oh so aware, time is running out. So I decided to run with the photographer cliché and become a sleaze as well. Current projects include photographing lots of young men in their undies. It's conceptual of course, it's about our fixation with youth and beauty and challenging gender roles and representations.
Lyndal Walker is an artist whose photographs and installations deal with issues including transience, consumerism, style, personal identity, youth and beauty. She has exhibited widely at venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; the Ian Potter Museum, Melbourne; The Armoury Art Fair, New York and La Panaderia, Mexico City. She was a founding member of both Citylights and 1st Floor Artist Run Gallery, where she continued as a program manager until its closure in 2002. |
